Improving flood defences on the River Ouse

This scheme, an Environment Agency project, was to make improvements to flood defences in the Lewes Cliffe flood cell on the north bank of the River Ouse within the conservation area.

The works, lasting 20 weeks, involved:

  •  The installation of a new flood gate and walls at a doctor’s surgery
  • The installation of new demountable flood barriers at a store car park
  •  The protection of various stores and businesses with new  flood walls, the raising of existing defences and strengthening of existing flood defences

  • Associated works including: brickwork, fencing, surfacing, landscaping, steps and hand rails, street lamps, electrics,  formwork and tree surgery.
  • The new wall construction is a concrete base with shear key and concrete flood wall with brickwork cladding to match adjacent properties.
