It is with great regret that we announce the sad passing of Mr Frank Mackley on January 11th 2010 after a short illness.

“Mr Frank” was born in 1923 and joined the J T Mackley & Co ltd in August 1939 direct from School.  He attended Brighton Technical College undertaking a Building Construction course which was curtailed by his call up to the Army. During his time in the Army “Mr Frank” gained invaluable experience in railway construction, Port and Harbour works including the Mulberry Harbour from conception to completion, surveying, civil and structural engineering.  After being de-mobbed in 1947 he returned to Mackleys briefly before leaving to further his experience with a firm of consulting engineers.  He worked on projects such as the construction of the Shoreham Cement Works, a sea outfall for Brighton B Power Station and a RC warehouse in the Gold Coast (now Ghana).

“Mr Frank” rejoined the firm in 1953 as Contracts Manager and became a Director in 1960.  During his career he held the positions of Chairman of the Southern Association of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Chairman of the Maritime and Waterways Engineering Board and Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers Piling Group.  He was twice elected as a Member of the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

“Mr Frank” was awarded the I.C.E. Webb Prize and the S.G. Brown Award and Medal by the Royal Society an honour only five members of the I.C.E. have been awarded.  In 1984 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

“Mr Frank” remained involved in the firm until his death on 11 January 2010.  He will be sorely missed by all those at J T Mackley & Co Ltd.
